What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine using fine needles inserted into the body. It has stood the test of time, dating back around 2,000 years. It is also a very safe form of medicine with few, if any, side effects.

Perhaps best known for musculoskeletal issues and pain, acupuncture can also alter the functioning of the body through the hormonal and nervous systems. These systems govern your body’s daily processes, and imbalance causes many common health issues, such as stress, headaches, insomnia, digestive problems, and fatigue. I look at all aspects of your health to make a diagnosis. Issues you may not think are connected make sense to an acupuncturist, like adding in pieces of a jigsaw to see the whole picture. Your acupuncture treatment will aim to resolve both the symptoms and underlying cause.

Your Treatment

Everyone is unique, so your acupuncture treatment is tailored to you. Diagnosis is based on in depth discussion about your health now and in the past. I’ll also ask to look at your tongue and take your pulse.

Once the diagnosis is made, I work out your personal treatment. This may involve other elements of Chinese Medicine such as Gua Sha or cupping as well as acupuncture, depending on your condition. When the needles are in place, you can relax for 20 to 30 minutes.

A Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis is often quite different to one made in Western Medicine. Your diagnosis looks at you as an individual and how your condition affects you. Two people with the same Western Medicine diagnosis can have completely different acupuncture treatments. You may not see your specific issue here, but acupuncture may still be able to help you. I’m always happy to talk about acupuncture, so please contact me if you’d like to know if acupuncture could help you.

You’ll find my clinic at Windsor House near the Valley Gardens in central Harrogate.
